the creativity engine

Mural for BCG Digital Ventures New York office

When we first moved into Hudson Yards, we were a small team, and we wanted to make the space feel a little more lived in, and a little more 'us'. So several of the designers and I divided up 5 promising walls between us, and went to work.

We've always talked about our company as an engine for creativity, and I've always loved intricate drawings of machinery. I remember spending hours as a kid poring over incredibly detailed painted cutaway drawings of aircraft and trucks and buildings. There is a particular magic to fully hand drawn line drawings, like the one we used as a basis for this mural - of a Rolls Royce aircraft engine in an old issue of Flight magazine.

L and I painted this one over two weekends, in about 10 hours total. We used the projector that normally serves as a TV in our home, but the combination of lighting in the office, the scale of the image and the intricacy of the drawing made it much harder than the fairly straightforward tracing we were expecting. We both had to use A4 printed versions of the image as references as we traced the image in jumbo Sharpie. The gold was a bright and shiny accent that really made the black and white image pop, especially against the red carpet of that section of the office.
