For several years, a close group of friends and I have run an end-of-year 50-word story competition. All stories have to be exactly 50 words long and submitted by midnight on December 31st. If you submit a story (or more than one) you get to vote on the stories that year. The winner gets a prize (sometimes).

It was run on email and Google Docs for a few years and then we put it on a custom-built site that allowed for word-counting, drafts, automated voting and tallies etc. I built it in PHP and Javascript with a MySQL backend.
